The Group Programme

articles

The group programme for bereaved children and their families is run three times a year during school term times.   The programme consists of weekly group sessions, run over eight weeks.  There is a group for primary school aged children (5-11 years), secondary school aged young people (11-18 years) and small groups for their parents/carers. The group aims to provide a safe space for difficult feelings and experiences to be expressed. Often the children we meet can feel alone in their grief, the group provides a way of meeting others who may have had similar experiences and therefore have a shared understanding of bereavement.  The sessions use a mixture of talking, listening and creative activities.  Following an initial home visit families are usually invited to join the next available programme.

Children we help

Beth aged 14 years came to a group programme after her dad had died suddenly and unexpectedly. She was having difficulty concentrating at school and felt that it was hard for others to understand how she was feeling. Her relationship with her dad hadn't always been easy and she was struggling with her guilt. At the group she met other young people who had experienced the death of someone significant to them. They shared their coping strategies with Beth. She began to realise that others had a similar mix of feelings as well as good and not so good memories. She felt less alone in her grief and found a new supportive network of friends.
